Step 3: Clear Communication 1 – pauses, hands and listing things in threes
In this step, we’ll work with CLEAR communication. To that end you’ll go through three fundamental techniques that give structure to your message. I’ll take you through pauses, hand gestures that you use to “serve” ideas to your audience or colleagues - and finally “the rule-of-three” which is the recognisable 1-2-3 or A-B-C structure we all like.
THE FULL-STOP PAUSE will signal the end of one “meaning”, marking it’s importance and giving your audience time to catch up, reflect on what you just said and get ready for the next thing.
THE RULE OF THREE / CALL-TO-ACTION is a straight-forward rhetorical device we all know - first this, then this and finally this. It makes things easier to remember and retain - and it makes you sound like you actually gave this enough thought to structure it into three parts.
SERVING HANDS is a way of using your hands to indicate that you have something - and you’re presenting it to someone else - it’s the “here you go” gesture. It is cross-cultural and well understood by everyone in the world who likes cake :)
